Roma changes its faces

A vision of development that transforms cultural heritage from a construction constraint to an asset in which to invest, supporting the city’s economic and social development.

The next step for the expansion of Line C’s route is the upcoming start of construction for the Venezia station, the design for which was completed and approved by the Special Commissioner in December 2022.

For the future of the line, the entire route from Montecompatri Pantano to Clodio/Mazzini is planned, along with the further option of extension from Clodio/Mazzini to Farnesina, useful to bring the city centre closer to the suburbs from the northwest to the southeast, improving the transport capacity of the capital thanks to a total of 31 stations and a length of about 29 km.

The extension of Line C of the Rome subway beyond Piazza Venezia has a strong transport value and completes the picture of interconnections with the other subway lines. In addition to the already available interchange for the city of Rome at San Giovanni station (Line A), 3 future exchanges are planned at Colosseo station (Line B), Venezia station (Line D waiting for design), and Ottaviano station (already active Line A).

Farnesina

The Farnesina station, located below the surface of the "Farnesina" impounded car depot, is surrounded by significant activities such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the monumental complex of the Foro Italico, the stadium, public administration institutions, university residences, etc. Two entrances are planned, located in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and on Via Antonio da S. Giuliano, near Ponte Milvio. The terminal station of the route is expected to have an expansion of the existing parking areas with two large park-and-ride facilities.

Auditorium

The Auditorium station is located in the open spaces surrounding the Palazzetto dello Sport between Via Pierre de Coubertin and Viale Tiziano, which are currently landscaped and partially used for parking.

Clodio/Mazzini

The Clodio-Mazzini station is located under Piazza Bainsizza, along the final section of Via Monte Santo, to optimize the flow of users in the Prati neighborhood.

Stazione Ottaviano

Ottaviano

The Ottaviano station is characterized by its connection to Line A, entirely underground, and located along Via Barletta with the connecting structure to Line A station on the side of Viale Giulio Cesare.

Stazione San Pietro

San Pietro

The San Pietro Station is located in the western area near Castel Sant'Angelo, close to Largo Giovanni XXIII/Piazza Pia and Lungotevere Vaticano.

Chiesa Nuova

The Chiesa Nuova Station is located beneath the square of the same name, near the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella and the adjacent Oratorio dei Filippini, a complex of exceptional historical and artistic importance.

Venezia

The Venezia station represents a significant engineering challenge: here, a station will be built 45 meters deep, with excavation retaining walls reaching a depth of 85 meters. Venezia will be a museum among museums: in addition to creating connections through 3 entrances to the most important museum buildings in the historic center of Rome, the station will host part of the ancient structures that will be found during the excavation, including the halls of Hadrian's Auditoria.

Design in progress

The Venezia – Clodio/Mazzini section develops through the Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano stations, the second interchange node of Line C with Line A, and Clodio/Mazzini. It represents an extension of the line of about 4 km long with 4 stations: Chiesa Nuova, San Pietro, Ottaviano, Clodio/Mazzini.

Beyond the Venezia station, the line tunnels will run along the axis of Corso Vittorio under the Baroque loop of the Tiber. Along this axis will be built the Chiesa Nuova station, located in the centre of the homonymous square, and the San Pietro station, located beyond the Tiber, inside the Bastions of Castel Sant’Angelo, on the Via della Conciliazione side.

Once past the Prati neighborhood and a further important interchange node with the existing Line A at Ottaviano station, the route will follow the axis of Viale Angelico up to Via Monte Santo, where Clodio – Mazzini station will be located.

The definitive design of the T2 section was suspended by the Contracting Station in March 2010, at the end of the first phase archaeological investigations. The 2023 Budget Law provided funds for the financing of the entire number of the works related to the aforementioned section, therefore a new start of the definitive design is imminent.

Future developments

As a possible extension opportunity of Line C, the Farnesina – Clodio/Mazzini section is in the preliminary design phase by the Client, Roma Metropolitane. The project under study provides for the construction of two stations: Auditorium and Farnesina. The first will be located near the Auditorium Parco della Musica and the Palazzetto dello Sport; the second will allow a faster connection to important places for the city such as the Foro Italico, the Stadio Olimpico, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Institutes of the Public Administration. The opportunity for its realisation has been financed within the 2022 manoeuvre.

Further potential options to be realised are the connections from Farnesina to the Sant’Andrea hospital in the Grottarossa area (C2 section); the connection from Teano to Ponte Mammolo (C1 section) and from Giardinetti to Tor Vergata (T6B section).
