One Earth

This year’s theme for World Environment Day is “One Earth – #OnlyOneEarth,” the same theme chosen for the first United Nations Environment Conference held in Stockholm in 1972, on its 50th anniversary. It serves as a call for collective global action to celebrate and protect our planet.

The 1972 Stockholm Conference stimulated the formation of ministries and agencies for the environment worldwide, leading to a series of global agreements to protect the environment.

One of the outcomes was the formalization of the idea of World Environment Day, first celebrated in 1974.
