History emerges from the capital
The interferences with the archaeological layers mainly concern the construction of stations and ventilation shafts, as the tunnels always run below the archaeological level, which is on average around 10-12 meters from the road surface.
First Phase Investigations
Starting in 2006, in addition to the investigation campaign conducted by the Municipality of Rome for the drafting of the preliminary project, the first phase of preventive archaeological investigations for sections T2, T3, T6, and T7, preparatory to the definitive design, began.
For the area of the Historic Centre – sections T2 and T3 – preventive investigations, defined as the First Phase, were carried out with the opening of sites in 22 archaeological sites.

2. Archaeological site Torre Spaccata Station – Casilina / Tor Tre Teste
3. Archaeological site Giglioli Station – Casilina / Tobagi.
Second Phase Investigations
Second phase investigations involve the full excavation of the volume of land of archaeological interest during the execution of the works.
This type of investigation has been completed for the entire operating line and for the section between the multifunctional shaft in Via Sannio and the Colosseo – Fori Imperiali station currently under construction. For the area of the Venezia Station and the subsequent T2 section, they will start simultaneously with the start of the works.
For the first functional section from Monte Compatri – Pantano to San Giovanni, during the construction of the underground structures, these second phase investigations were completed, which led to the discovery of a considerable amount of finds in the 29 investigated archaeological sites.
The activity carried out, based on excavations of adequate size for the works to be carried out and not on point corings, has allowed, on the one hand, to update all the historical cartography, and on the other hand, to define project solutions absolutely compatible with the archaeological substrate, as confirmed by all the Superintendencies.
